“New Stages South-East” is a joint project of the Goethe-Institutes of Southeast Europe – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Romania, Serbia, and Cyprus. It is a multi-year project focused on the development of contemporary playwriting and the promotion of international exchanges and cooperation, with parts of the project held in all partner countries.

As part of the project, a multi-month workshop has been organized in Croatia, where five selected young authors develop their new or existing texts under the mentorship of Ivor Martinić, while a Masterclass held by Ivana Sajko is to be held in July 2021. Moreover, in cooperation with the International Drama Colony “From Text to Performance”, organized by the Croatian ITI Centre, the most successful drama of the Zagreb workshop will be presented through stage reading in 2022 in Grožnjan.

As part of the activities in Croatia, the Goethe-Institut Croatia, in cooperation with the professional association SPID (Croatian Screenwriters and Playwrights Guild) and the Croatian ITI Centre, will organize a round table “Contemporary Playwriting: Good Practices” which will discuss the position of playwrights in Croatia, but also in the wider region. Good practices and the importance of the development of contemporary drama will be discussed, as well as the ways in which the theatre community in its institutional, as well as independent form, can actively create opportunities, and thus the future of the theatre scene.

Nina Križan, producer at the Croatian ITI Centre, SPID member Tomislav Zajec, dramaturge, playwright, professor at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, and dramaturgy associate of the Zagreb Youth Theatre, and Dimitrije Kokanov, home dramaturge in the cult Belgrade Atelje 212 Theatre, will participate in the round table to be held on July 3 at 6 p.m., moderated by the dramaturge, playwright, and director Vedrana Klepica.
